Bangin’ Barley Black Bean Burgers + Cheezy Sunflower Sauce

May 23, 2019 By julia

Hand-held food season is upon us and you need a burger fix… in the way of these meaty vegan burgers.

I feel ya.

With these BBBBB’s the flavours are tasty, the texture is meaty, and the creation is simple.

Slap on some vegan cheese for the last few minutes of cookin’ (I find the meltier ones are VioLife, Sheese Cheese, Chao or Gusta Americano all found at Vegan Supply), and you’re well on your way to burger town.

These work best on the frying pan with a smidgin’ of avo oil. They also survive on the barby – just make sure you oil up the grill before you throw them on.

What are you waiting for? Call up some buds, bring home some vegan buns and cook up some bangin’ burgs!

Cooking time

minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup barley (pre-cooked)

  • 1 can black beans (rinsed)

  • 1 flax egg (mix 1 tbsp ground flax + 3 tbsp water, let sit 5 minutes)

  • 1 tbsp cumin

  • 2 tbsp Bragg’s liquid aminos

  • 1.5 tsp paprika

  • 1 tbsp onion powder

  • 1 tbsp miso paste

  • Cheezy Sunflower Sauce
  • 1 cup sunflower seeds, soaked (overnight or in hot water for 30 minutes)

  • 3/4 cup water

  • juice of 1/2 lemon

  • 1/8 cup nutritional yeast (nooch)

  • 1 clove garlic

  • pinch of salt

  • Burger Building Ingredients:
  • Bun or lettuce wrap

  • Red onion, sliced

  • Pickles, sliced

  • Dijon

  • Tomato

  • Vegan Cheese (like Violife, Chao, Gusta, Sheese… all found online at Vegan Supply)

Directions

  • Add all ingredients to your food processor and pulse until blended, but still with some chunky texture
  • Turn your pan onto medium heat, add 1 tsp of avocado or coconut oil (or crank your BBQ to medium, and oil the grill)
  • Grill or fry each burger 4 minutes per side. Add vegan cheese to the burger during the last couple of minutes with the lid on (melty goodness)
  • While burgers are cookin’, put all Cheezy Sunflower Sauce ingredients into a small food processor and blend until smooth.
  • Build your burger! Lettuce bun or bread bun + romaine + red onion + dijon + sunflower sauce (or this garlic cream sauce) + tomato + pickles.

Notes

  • Time does not include the cooking of the barley, or soaking the sunflower seeds.

Ginger Coconut Kombucha Float

February 21, 2019 By julia

Time to float on!  Kombucha float style!

Today we’re getting our float on… the easiest way ever.

2 ingredients (3 if you count the berries on top), a satisfying pour, and a super delicious spoonful of bubbles n’ cream!

Just like you might remember, but minus the pop n’ dairy.

Have at er’ kids!

Simple as:

  1. Scoop
  2. Pour
  3. Spoon

Today we’re using the Ginger Kombucha by Rise!! Their Rose Shizandra or Maple Blueberry boosh’s would be a great idea too.

I do make my own boosh, but it’s not always ready to go, and… I really like this kind. You can find Rise in most grocery stores these days, and this ginger one goes deliciously with the vanilla coconut ice cream (by Coconut Bliss).

Que the nostalgia, cuz here’s a taste of childhood in the summer!!

Vegan Hemp Pesto Pasta Salad | GF + Oil-Free + Ready in 20

August 30, 2018 By julia

This is the meanest, greenest vegan hemp pesto pasta salad on the block!

Super flavour-y brilliance without the parm, oil, or gluten. BOOM.

To do list: make the pesto, boil the pasta, throw in some flavourful colours and you have yourself a meal!

Not only does this bode well for potluck-style weddings (which is what our weekends have been filled with this month), but it’s also a saviour when it comes to busy weeks and last minute dinners. Just make a TON of this goodness and your week will be stress-free in the food realm.

Serve it up with a big ol’ salad drizzled with this dressing, and spruce it up by adding different proteins each night (tempeh, smoked tofu, seitan or sausage slices, anything gardein, veggie burger chunks… you get the drift).

Easy & plant-based… that’s what it’s all about!

BY THE WAY:

I’m working away at an e-book for you guys!

All you need to know about being plant-based for a week with 30 recipes, nutrition tips, and a whole week of meals planned out for you.
My goal is to make this plant-based lifestyle as fun and easy as possible for as many people as possible. I hope this e-book will to be the ultimate guide for YOU to achieve that🙂

Chocolate Green Smoothie Popsicles | Detox Pops

August 23, 2018 By julia

There’s a whole lot of hidden green goodness in these babies! Chocolate green smoothie popsicles…..

A frosty treat? Yes.

A refreshing snack? Uh huh.

A mega-dose of nutrients? Totes.

A smoothie on a stick? HELLS YA

… all drizzled with vegan chocolate.

There are smoothie pops, and then there are these. They’re creamy with almond milk, sweet with banana, and incredibly easy with Chelsie’s Blender Bites.

Chelsie is a genius. She had the problem that most of us have when it comes to smoothie making.

Here’s how it goes:

  • Take every piece of produce out of the fridge
  • Throw a bit of everything in the blender
  • Add your powders
  • Add your frozen fruit
  • Then, WHA-BAM!! A tornado has now graced your kitchen.

The Blender Bites makes it an easy affair with no clean up. They’re little frozen pucks packed with greens, fruit, and superfoods that you just throw into your blender with the liquid of choice and maybe a banana (or not), and call it a smoothie. SO ridiculously easy.

I love local companies (Chelsie makes all of the frozen pucks in Vancouver), especially when they add so much ease to my morning.

I went a little further than your typical smoothie today to create these frosty treats!

Read on for the recipe if you want a super healthy pop, still packed with flavour and drizzled in chocolate goodness (totally optional) to slap that junk food craving in the face.

🌱 SKIN LOVING TIPS ⤵️ From a simple is bet 🌱 SKIN LOVING TIPS ⤵️
From a simple is better, 30 somethin’, long routine avoiding kinda gal…who wants to support elastin & boost collagen 🤷‍♀️

I’ve had an interesting relationship with my skin, especially in high school.
Did so much to try to manage it…accutane…birth control pills.👎🏼

The biggest skin game-changer for me was going vegan 7 years ago & ditched the dairy especially.
My skin was NOTICEABLY less inflamed (no more hormones coming from my food).

I’m not ‘use a million products’ kinda gal, but now at 34, I guess it’s time to start giving a little extra attention to the skin care regime 😆

🌱 Lifestyle tips + products I’m loving right meow 🌱

#1: nutrition: eat whole plant foods packed with fibre & water content. Minimize the processed foods & sugar. Focus on plant protein from legumes, organic soy, seeds (add a little @Complement Chocolate Protein to your lattes)

#2: support your gut: focus on 🌱 diversity, fermented foods, and add pre-biotics and postbiotics to your life (love @Complement Gut Nurture)

#3: greens: pack your smoothie with as much as possible, top everything with sprouts, add a greens powder to your life (most potent: @complement Daily Greens)

#4: antioxidants! From plants, especially berries. Amp it up with functional mushrooms (hello, @staywyldorganics)

#5: nutrient support: take these 8 skin & hair-supporting essentials (B12, vegan D3, K2, zinc, selenium, magnesium, DHA/EPA omegas, iodine…all in @complement’s daily vegan minty multi)

#6: creams & things:
I’m a new, huge fan of @puritywoodsinc Dream, Eye,Night Creams, and Elastin Serum.
Created by vegans at the @art_ofantiaging.
They use Maple Leaf and other amazing organic plant organic ingredients specifically for skin elasticity and collagen production support.
And, oh my lawwwrd it smells so fresh & citrusy 👌 My skin is feeling noticeably smoother after a month of this!
Also: algae face mask… slap the ocean on the face with @beauty.botanics made by local, Ahnnabelle 💕

#7: stress less & sweat more: every day
