6 Vegan Halloween Candy Bars You Need in Your Life

October 25, 2017 By julia

Trick or Treat or give me something VEGAN, SCRUMPTIOUS, & HEALTHY to eat! (AKA vegan halloween candy bars).

I’ll take the third option. And yes, ‘healthy’, ‘vegan’, and ‘scrumptious’ can happen simultaneously.

…even on Halloween.

It’s easy to bring out the tickle trunk and throw on your creepy wig, but it’s not so easy to skip the treats flowing to you from every dark corner.

Mars Bars, Snickers, Twix and Kit Kats… Coffee Crisp, Caramilk, Reece’s Peanut Butter cups and Oh Henrys, OH MY.

As a kid, I always went for the treat of course (what kid doesn’t??), followed by a full blown sprint to the next house, just to make sure I had enough time to hit up the haunted houses for a second round. Then came the organizing of the mega-bag of trick-or-treat goodies into their appropriate category, while gobbling down candy until the goblins came home. After the first night of indulgence, the ‘Goblin’ came by the house while we were sleeping and stole half of my earnings. At least he always left a cute, scribbly note…. right, MOM?

Anyways…I’m thankful for that because those halloween treats may pack a tasteful punch, but along with that comes additives, refined sugar, milk fat, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, gelatine, artificial colours and flavours, and hydrogenated palm oil. Not only are these ingredients harsh on your body, mood, energy, cholesterol level, blood sugar level and digestion, but Mother Nature pays a price too. Yes, animal agriculture is number 1 when it comes to rainforest deforestation, green house gas emissions, water use and ocean dead zones, but the mass production of palm and corn for processed foods (like Halloween faves) is not far behind.

OK enough of the goblins and ghouls, witches and spiders, doom and gloom, talk… It’s time to get into these delicious Halloween  alternatives to your favourite childhood treats!

I scoured the web to find delicious halloween candy bars from a few of my favourite bloggers and rounded them up for you!

Which one will you try??

Vegan Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies | Chewy and Crispy

October 19, 2017 By julia

Finally! A vegan chocolate chip oatmeal cookie recipe that my guy approves of.

These are crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, healthy, and simple enough to make every week!

So much YES!

The cookie jar must always, always be full, after all.

I tried replacing the coconut oil with banana, but it didn’t have the crispy-ness we were looking for. So, coconut oil and almond butter make up the majority of the liquid part of this cookie, with oats being the star of the dry ingredients.

There is something SO special about baking cookies.

Maybe it’s the nostalgia. Maybe it’s the smell. Maybe it’s the fact that you can eat the cookie dough as you go (one of the many perks of veganizing everything)!

What ever it is… I like it. ‘I like it a-lot’ (insert Arnold accent here).

And I think Davey likes it even more, especially when this recipe gets pumped out of the kitchen.

I had him blind taste-test the options: banana vs. coconut oil… 10 minutes vs. 12 minutes…well, he lived up to his taste-tester role in the kitchen and concluded that the best version of this cookie recipe features good ol’ coconut oil and a couple more minutes in the oven.

I have to mention… These go real well with this homemade Hemp Milk recipe (no straining needed, and literally the easiest plant-based milk you can make at home). Because let’s face it, what’s a cookie without the dunking?

Benefits:

  • Almond butter is a good place to go for your Vitamin E needs. Why do we need Vitmain E? It’s key for healthy skin, eyes, and a strong immune system. It’s also a strong antioxidant, to help ward off disease!
  • Chia is one of the best ways to get your omega 3s, it gives you all essential amino acids, plus it’s packed to the nines with vitamin K (which helps calcium travel throughout the body, making it great for bone density and essential for healing from injuries).
  • Oats have a complete amino acid profile, containing all essential amino acids. They’re also packed with manganese, which you need for fat and carbohydrate metabolism and brain & nervous function. Not to mention they’re packed with fibre, yet low in fat, making them a good option for knockin’ off the pounds.

Nut-Free Maca Date Balls & Vegan Festival Eats

July 5, 2017 By julia

Sometimes all you need a two-biter to make your day.

Need it to be gluten-free, nut-free and packed with nutrients? Look no further.

Here’s a two-bite morsel (AKA meteor ball) that will make you bounce of the walls from all that whole-food, plant-based energy. Not to mention… make your taste buds sing.

Easy as dump, blend, roll.

It’s festival season. It’s camping season. T’is the season for glorious balls of tasty nutrients.

These are perfect for camping. You can take them in a big zip lock, and keep them in your cooler until you head off on your hike, then transfer to a little baggy to stash them in your back pack.

Or, if you’re ever needing a little boost of energy at a festival, meet your new best friend.

There’s nothing like a hand-to mouth treat that is actually healthy for your cells, your muscles, your brain, your digestion… and of course, your dance moves.

This weekend calls for these little bites. Bass Coast is coming up, which it’s all about taking your dance shoes out and busting a move. Since cooking time will be squeezed out of the schedule because of all of the art to look at, people to learn from and dancing to do, these are the PERFECT bites to bring in a cooler to keep us sustained for the festivities.

Dress by @ChicLittleBoho

Oh ya! And, I’m excited to be bringing these balls to the Hooked On Plants Bass Coast workshop too!

While we’re on the topic let’s talk festival eats! What eating at a festival really means is snacking on the go. It’s important to bring snacks that will sustain you, hydrate you, and fill you up with nutrients and good energy.

And water. LOTS and lots of water. Throw in some electrolytes or even a dash of Himalayan salt, and you’ll be loving it.

Vegan Festival food ideas:

  • Hummus and veggies/tortilla chips
  • Fruit – any kind, and all of it! This is nature’s way of giving us amazing energy packed with nutrients and hydration
  • Pre-make one-bowl meals to take spoonfuls of regularly:
    • Soba noodle salad
    • Simple green curry
    • Quinoa sweet potato salad
    • Pasta salad
    • Butternut Mac & Peas
  • Salad fixin’s: Bring lettuces, tomato, avocado, and seeds, plus one of these dressings in a jar
  • Pre-bake sweet potatoes (either whole or as fries), and dip in organic ketchup
  • Bring these Fudgy Quinoa Brownies to drool over and sustain you
  • Pre-make popcorn with coconut oil and nutritional yeast to pack in the B12 (try adding curry powder or garlic powder, YUM), and bring it in a big re-usable ziplock
  • Roast chickpeas for a salty snack
  • Bring along your favourite green powder to throw in your water bottle in the AM.
  • Pre-make and bring along a tupperware of Jules Fuel for breakfast so you can pack in some mega-nutrients before your day even starts
  • Rice, Beans, Guac, Salsa, Wraps. Enough said.

Ok, now back to the balls.

The magic ingredient in this recipe is Maca.

Benefits:

~Maca root is an adaptogen. All adaptogens bring your body back to homeostasis (or balance). Adaptogens grow in stressful situations (extreme weather), meaning they need to adapt to their environment. That’s why these amazing herbs and roots are so beneficial! Maca is especially good for balancing hormones, strengthening immunity, increasing energy & labido,

~Dates are the base to these ‘meteor balls’. Dates pack a mean punch of minerals, fibre, and clean, easily digestible energy. Perfect for the summer adventures.

~Hemp seeds bring a complete plant-protein to the mix. Plant protein is easily assimilated by your body to help you grow beautiful hair and nails. You really don’t have to worry about where you’re getting your protein from when you eat a whole-food plant-based diet.

Maca Date Balls

AKA Meteor Balls

Time: 10 minutes + 30 minutes chill time

Serves: 15-20 balls

Ingredients:

  • 15 pitted dates (1 cup packed)
  • 1 chia egg (1 tbsp chia + 3 tbsp water, let sit for 5 minutes until gooey)
  • 1/2 cup hemp seeds
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup shredded coconut
  • 2 tbsp maca
  • 2 tbsp cacao nibs

For rolling:

  • 1/4 cup shredded coconut

Directions:

  1. Pulse dates in food processor until small chunks form (but don’t pulse so much that a pastey ball forms)
  2. Add the rest of the ingredients except for cacao nibs and rolling coconut
  3. Blend until ball forms
  4. Add cacao nibs, and blend until mixed evenly
  5. Spread rolling shredded coconut out in a flat bowl

  7. Roll date mixture into small balls, then place them in the coconut bowl
  8. Roll the balls around until coconut coats them completely

Tip time:
The secret to sticking with plants only?
Knowing your WHY.
This is mine.

I went plant-based a decade ago after multiple knee surgeries to calm inflammation, and stayed for the animals and the planet. As a former Olympian, holistic nutritionist and plant-based chef, my goal is simple: meals that fuel you, (each calorie counts towards making sure you’re thriving in this life), must taste amazing and don’t take all night.

This one is creamy, savoury, crispy, and packed with protein.

💡 LIFE HACK:
I always double or triple my recipes so I have leftovers for throw together dinners or lunches later in the week (think wraps, bowls, mega salads). So when I say 2 yams, I’m actually roasting 4 to 6! Future you will thank present you.

3. Soak soy curls in water for 10 minutes, then strain.
4. Fry in a teeeeny bit of oil with a splash of Bragg’s for about 4 minutes, stirring so they brown on all sides. A couple batches.
5. Blend all dressing ingredients until smooth.
6. Toss romaine with the dressing, then add red onion, capers and avocado.
7. Plate the salad, top with yam rounds, peel the caramelized onion into the centre, and finish with the soy curl chicken.
